American Kennel Club Recognizes 2 New Dog Breeds

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- There will be two new breeds competing for Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

The American Hairless Terrier and the Sloughi are the newest additions to the list of breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club.

There are now some 189 breeds recognized by the AKC. These newest additions can compete at Westminster next year.

The two new breeds are different in many ways, but "both breeds make wonderful companions for the right family," AKC spokeswoman Gina DiNardo told the Associated Press.

The North African hound, also known as the Sloughi, is an ancient breed mainly found in Morocco and other parts of North Africa. They need lots of exercise and are considered intelligent, alert and sensitive. They are used to hunt in Africa and are known for speed.

The American Hairless Terriers are a relatively rare breed. They and are considered hard working, intelligent and social. These bare-skinned dogs sometimes have short coats, and are good choice for allergy sufferers.
