Amazon Shows Off Prototype Drone That Would Deliver Items Within 30 Minutes

(CBS SF) – Almost two years after revealing its plans to deliver packages via drone, Amazon released video of a drone that would deliver items to customers within 30 minutes.

In a video posted to YouTube on Sunday, Amazon showed off one of their prototypes delivering a package. Amazon said the drone would be part of a "family" of unmanned aerial vehicles tailored to different environments.

The drone in the video was described as a "hybrid" that would take off and land vertically, while it would fly to destinations like an airplane. Amazon said this drone would fly at an altitude of nearly 400 feet, would have a range of 15 miles and have technology to avoid obstacles.

It is unclear when Amazon would have the drones in service.

According to CNET, Amazon is working with regulators. Spokesperson Kristen Kish said they would deploy "when and where we have the regulatory support needed to safely realize our vision."

Google and Walmart are also reportedly working on drones for deliveries.
