Allegedly Drunk Fed Ex Driver Behind Bars After Hitting CHP Officer On Highway 50

SACRAMENTO (KPIX 5) -- A San Lorenzo man is in jail, charged with drunk driving after hitting a California Highway Patrol officer who was investigating an accident in Sacramento Saturday.

FedEx driver Gregory Ramirez of San Lorenzo was charged with driving under the influence, as well as possession of a controlled substance.

CHP Officer Vincent Smith was trying to move two vehicles involved in a crash along Highway 50 when he was struck in the upper and lower torso.

"He suffered major injuries due to the collision and he's still in very serious condition. We have our command staff and his family there at the hospital with him and we're praying for a speedy recovery," CHP Officer Michael Bradley said.

Smith is an 18-year veteran of the CHP.

Ramirez is being held on $50,000 bail.

In a statement FedEx said, "Our thoughts are with the officer and others involved in this accident, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation."
