Alarming Number Of Kitten Ringworm Infections At Silicon Valley Shelter

MILPITAS (CBS SF) -- There has been an alarming outbreak of ringworm in the kittens at a Silicon Valley shelter.

An estimated 50 to 60 kittens at the Human Society Silicon Valley are being treated for the highly contagious fungal infection.

Ringworm is not fatal, but the shelter said kittens may have to be euthanized to stop the spread of the disease.

The shelter is looking for volunteers to foster the infected kittens, and is offering a special 2-hour class to show then on how to deal with the disease.

Ringworm is treated with special baths and oral medication. It takes about 6 weeks to eliminate.

Volunteers interested in fostering a kitten should contact the shelter at (408) 262-2133. There is more information on the Human Society Silicon Valley's website, hssv.org.
