Accused Penn-State Bomb Maker From Bay Area Faces Deportation

PITTSBURGH (CBS/AP) -- A university student from Russia charged with making bombs in his central Pennsylvania apartment is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate next week who will determine whether he'll remain jailed until the charges go to trial.

Eighteen-year-old Vladislav Miftakhov, formerly of San Carlos, Calif., was charged Thursday with possessing unregistered bombs and related materials when his apartment was searched last month near the Penn State-Altoona campus. That's about 85 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Federal authorities have taken over the case from the Altoona police, who say they found the materials Jan. 24, while searching Miftakhov's room on a tip from his landlord.

Miftakhov will remain in jail if U.S. Magistrate Keith Pesto in Johnstown determines Monday that Miftakhov is either too dangerous, or too much of a risk to flee prosecution.
