AC Transit bus plows into building in Oakland after collision with another vehicle
At least four AC Transit bus passengers were hurt in Oakland after their bus crashed with another vehicle before smashing into a building, authorities said.
The Oakland Fire Department said crews were dispatched at about 1:18 p.m. to the area of 68th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. Four people on the bus were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, the Fire Department said.
The bus originally collided with a white SUV before it crashed into an auto body shop, coming to rest about a third of the way inside the large, warehouse-style building.
"We were in the back of the shop working on some cars, and we just heard three loud bangs," said Kevin Warren, owner of All Bout Cars body shop. "It sounded like a bomb at first. We thought from the first two hits that we were going to come out and see an accident, then when we came out here, the bus just came through the gate into the building."
Warren said he and his co-workers helped eight people off the bus and broke some of the bus's windows to get them out.
Update: the cause of this vehicle incident is under investigation, all patients have been transported and Oakland Fire personnel is no longer on scene. Expect delays along Foothill Blvd between 65-73rd for the next few hrs. https://t.co/kooWpj1ORo pic.twitter.com/aOR2B3pqlv

A structural engineer was requested to evaluate the impacted building, the Fire Department said.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
An AC Transit spokesperson said there were 11 people involved: eight passengers on the bus, the bus driver, and two people in the white SUV the bus hit before slamming into the building.
"Despite all the damage that we see here, there were no severe injuries," said spokesperson Robert Lyles.
Witnesses say the white SUV was making a U-turn in the intersection when the bus hit it. Investigators say they're still trying to determine which vehicle had the green light and the right of way.
"Once the bus made contact with the car in the intersection, it sent the bus out of control, over the curb and into the side of the building," Lyles said.
"It was really scary," said Warren. "I haven't ever seen anything like this in my life. I've been here since 2019. I think this is probably the 5th time a car came through this gate, but it's the first time something went into the building."
Lyles said everyone involved was taken to the hospital for observation, but all of the injuries were considered to be minor.
Traffic along Foothill Boulevard between 65th and 73rd Avenue was impacted for several hours, the Fire Department said.
