Abandoned Warehouse Roof Collapses In San Jose, No Injuries Reported
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- No one was injured when a large portion of the roof collapsed in an abandoned San Jose warehouse Monday evening, a fire captain said.
The collapse was reported at 5:03 p.m. at 1480 Nicora Ave., according to the fire department.
The building is an older-style warehouse with large timber trusses supporting the roof. One of the trusses collapsed, bringing about 35 percent of the roof down with it, fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort said.
Firefighters responding were at first uncertain that the warehouse was abandoned and called for a search effort to locate any potential victims, Van Elgort said.
A search and rescue team responded for the search and a hazardous materials team responded to make sure there were no chemical leakages or any other dangers posed by the collapse, Van Elgort said.
After searching the rubble with the aid of search dogs, rescuers concluded that the warehouse had been vacant at the time of the collapse.
Investigators have still not determined what caused the truss to fail, Van Elgort said.
