9-Year-Old Antioch Boy Playing With Fireworks Severely Burns Hands

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- An incident with fireworks sent a 9-year-old to hospital Wednesday with injuries to his hand, police said.

Officers and firefighters responded around 8 a.m. to an apartment complex at 2200 Sycamore Drive in reference to an injured child and an explosion heard in an apartment, police said.

The child's mother also called 911 to report her 9-year-old son was playing with fireworks inside their apartment and had injured his hand.

The child suffered severe trauma and burn injuries to his right hand and fingertips, police said.

He was transported to an area hospital to be treated for the injuries. There were no other reported injuries in the incident.

Investigators are looking into how the child obtained the fireworks.
