8 Displaced In Overnight West Oakland Residential Fire

OAKLAND (CBS SF)— Eight residents of two buildings in West Oakland were displaced by a fire that occurred early Monday morning, a fire battalion chief said.

The fire was reported at a residential building in the 1200 block of 34th Street around 2 a.m., and was controlled about 40 minutes later.

Battalion Chief Adrian Sheppard said the blaze started on the first floor of the building and then moved through an open window to a car parked in a carport, Sheppard said.

The car became engulfed in flames and the fire moved into a neighboring building, he said. The vehicle was destroyed in the blaze.

The eight displaced residents, who include children, were able to get out safely on their own, Sheppard said. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but Sheppard said it is not considered suspicious.

The residents have not been able to return home because of the extent of the damage, he said.
