76-Year-Old Woman Killed In Antioch Vehicle Shooting

ANTIOCH (CBS SF/BCN) -- A 76-year-old woman died Tuesday night in Antioch after someone fired shots at the vehicle she was riding in, authorities said.

Antioch police said officers responded to a 7:02 p.m. 911 call reporting a shooting involving a vehicle on Canada Valley Road near Pinnacle View Way. The caller -- a 29-year-old man who was driving the vehicle -- requested medical attention for his passenger.

Officers and paramedics arrived on the scene and began life-saving measures on the woman, who had one gunshot wound to her back. She was taken to a local hospital where she died of her injuries. The driver was uninjured.

Investigators said they believed the shots were fired from another vehicle traveling in the immediate area of Canada Valley Road.

"Terrible. Absolutely terrible," said a neighbor working in his garage who heard the gunfire. "Antioch hasn't been doing that great for a long time and it seems to be getting worse. Obviously, it's tough to see, tough to see something like that happen this close."

The crime scene and where the car stopped just west of Highway 4 in the Park Ridge development, one of Antioch's newest neighborhoods.

"It's very sad," says Tamika Huey. "This is a nice area of Antioch."

Neighbors say the shooting is strikingly out of place here. Huey was walking in the area with her son today.

"Very quiet neighborhood," Huey says. "A school right there, and a park right behind it. We take walks. Just to hear that is sad."

This is Antioch's fourth homicide of the year. They were 13 homicides in 2021.

The name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
