6-Year-Old Killed In San Jose Mall Parking Lot

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A 6-year-old boy holding his mother's hand as they walked in a San Jose mall parking lot was killed late Thursday night when a car struck the family, authorities said.

San Jose Police PIO Albert Morales said the tragedy happened at around 9:34 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Westfield Oakridge mall in South San Jose.

"The mother was holding the hand of her 6-year-old son, they were walking in the parking lot with another sibling when they were struck by a Mercedes," he said.

All three were taken to the hospital where the little boy was declared dead. The mother and other child's condition was not immediately available.

The Santa Clara coroner has identified the young boy as Aniket Gadre from San Jose.

Aniket is the 21st person killed in a traffic collision in San Jose this year.

Morales said the Mercedes driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with police. The driver is not suspected to have been using drugs or alcohol, police said.

Anyone with information about the collision has been asked to call Detective Verissa Sadsad of the San Jose Police Department's Traffic Investigation Unit at (408) 277-4654.
