6.5 Earthquake Rocks Japan Coast; Tsunami Advisory Issued

TOKYO (CBS SF) -- A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Japan Friday, prompting a tsunami advisory for Japan coastal regions.

The earthquake initially measured 6.8 magnitude, but was downgraded to 6.5, and struck less than 100 miles off the eastern Japanese coast, about 176 miles northeast of Tokyo, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Tsunami advisories were issued for the Pacific coast of Tohoku region as well as coastal regions of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. Residents were being advised to immediate get out of the water and leave the coast.

There was no immediate word of damage or injuries.

Coastal areas of California and Northern California were not under a tsunami threat.
