5-Alarm Fire Spreads To UCSF Roof, Research Center Evacuated

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The five-alarm fire at an apartment building under construction near AT&T Park has now spread to nearby a UCSF Mission Bay campus building roof.

Video from Chopper 5 shows white smoke rising from the high-rise roof at the cardiovascular research building at 555 Mission Bay. Several burning holes are visible in the structure.

Fire crews have been using a "curtain of water" to protect neighboring buildings, but it appears heat and embers have gotten through and are now burning the roof.

Fire crews immediately evacuated the occupied building. The adjacent UCSF Cancer Center also was evacuated, but did not catch fire.
