7 Tweets Bid Farewell To Beloved 415 Area Code & Hello To Pesky New Dialing Procedure

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Dialing phone numbers in the Bay Area is about to get complicated, and longtime "415" area code fans are not happy about it.

Starting Saturday, the new 628 area code 'overlay' goes into effect and callers must use the new 1 + 10-digit dialing procedure for all calls. After February 21, if you don't use the new dialing procedure, your calls will not be completed and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again.

It's all because the classic three number prefix "415" for Marin and San Francisco has run out of capacity and starting next month, will no longer be assigned to new numbers.

People on Twitter spoke up about the change and the loss of personal identity.

But aside from a personal attachment, having to dial four extra digits for every call could be annoying.

So consider this your warning and if you haven't already, save yourself some frustration and update those speed dials now.
