Crash Involving 8 Vehicles In San Jose Leaves 10 Injured; Driver Arrested

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Police said speed and alcohol played a role in a Sunday crash involving eight vehicles that sent several people to the hospital in San Jose.

The San Jose Police Department responded at 9:28 p.m. to Ocala Avenue near Capitol Expressway after an officer saw a black Mercedes traveling down the road at a high rate of speed.

Police said the Mercedes failed to stop at a red light and entered the intersection, broad siding another vehicle.

The Mercedes rolled several times, crashed into other cars and caught fire.

"The officers who were the first on scene viewed the crash, pulled out fire extinguishers and requested more fire extinguishers because they saw the vehicle on fire with occupants inside," police Sgt. Lawrence Birch told KCBS.

Birch said three people were trapped in the vehicle when it caught fire and that the driver tried to flee on foot but was apprehended a short time later.

Responding emergency crews were able to put out the fire and extract the passengers.

Police said the driver and three passengers were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and six other people were transported to the hospital with various injuries.
