3 Injured, 10 Displaced After Escaping San Francisco Apartment Fire

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Three people were injured and 10 displaced in a structure fire in San Francisco's Silver Terrace neighborhood early Friday morning, fire officials said.

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire in the first block of Apollo Street at about 3:15 a.m., a dispatcher said.

Three people, including two who are elderly, were able to exit the home, but were transported to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries including cuts and smoke inhalation.

San Francisco Fire Battalion Chief Michael Thompson told KCBS about the frantic moments as fire spread and one man tried to escape and warn the other tenants.

"As he ran up stairs yelling, 'Fire! Fire!' trying to wake everyone else up, the fire actually followed him up the stairs," he said.

"He actually ended up jumping out the back side window and two people jumped out the front side window."

A total of 10 people were displaced, he said. The fire was deemed under control at 3:57 a.m. Thompson said.

Residents of an adjoining unit able to escape without injury but were without electricity. They went to the nearby Bayview police station and the Red Cross was on the scene.

Thompson said an investigation to how the fire started was underway but that there were no outward signs the fire was suspicious.
