2 Penguins Join SF Zoo Colony During Ceremonial 'March Of The Penguins'

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Two Magellanic or South American penguin chicks waddled in front of nearly 1,000 San Francisco Zoo & Gardens visitors to join the rest of the zoo's penguin colony Saturday, zoo officials said.

Rennie and Pip, a male and a female, made their first public appearance at 10:30 a.m. during what zoo officials call the March of the Penguins.

The march celebrates the chicks' graduation from two months of preparation before joining the largest breeding colony of Magellanic penguins in U.S. captivity, according to zoo officials.

Visitors can identify Pip with her green wing marker and Rennie with his yellow wing marker.

Rennie is named after board emeritus member Rennie Spaulding, zoo officials said. Zoo members submitted suggestions for Pip's name and Pip was chosen in a drawing.
