17-Year-Old Girl Killed In Crash Near Port Of Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A teenager who died in a crash near the Port of Oakland early Friday morning has been identified as Kaitlyn Benson, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

A car crash into a pole was reported just after midnight in the 500 block of Maritime Street, according to police.

Two 17-year-old girls were in the car. Both were taken to the hospital where Benson, the driver, was pronounced dead, police said. The other girl's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police said both girls are from outside of Oakland.

Speed appears to be factor in the crash but it is unknown if the car was involved in street racing, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene, several cars were leaving the area and no one stayed to talk to investigators, police said.
