14-Year Old Injured In Gang Shooting In Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- A 14-year-old boy was injured in a gang-motivated shooting on a downtown trail Tuesday night, Santa Rosa police said Wednesday.

Police said they received a phone call at 9:21 p.m. on Tuesday reporting the shooting.

Officers discovered two juvenile victims who said they were sitting and drinking on the Prince Memorial Greenway along Santa Rosa Creek just west of the Santa Rosa Avenue entrance when two male suspects approached and accused them of being part of a rival gang.

According to police, the victims, ages 14 and 16 and both from Santa Rosa, said one of the suspects revealed a handgun that was concealed in his waistline.

The suspect fired at least five shots, prompting the victims to flee, police said. The 14-year-old was struck by two gunshots and was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening.

The second victim was not hit by the gunshots.

The victims described both of the suspects as men between the ages of 18 and 20 who may have fled the area on two BMX-style bikes.

The Sonoma County Alliance "Take Back Our Community" program is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the two suspects.

Santa Rosa police encourage any witnesses to call the department's Gang Crimes Team at (707) 543-3670. Witnesses who want to remain anonymous can leave a message by calling (707) 543-4264.
