13-Year-Old Girl Dies Of Injuries From San Francisco Mission District Fire Which Killed Father

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS-SF) -- A 13-year-old girl trapped with her family as her second story home burned in San Francisco's Mission District earlier this month has died.

Amal Shaibi died Wednesday at San Francisco General Hospital from injuries related to smoke inhalation.  She is not the fire's first victim. Her father, 38-year-old Mohamed Shaibi died over the weekend.  A relative told the San Francisco Chronicle Amal's mother and two brothers, ages 6 and 17, have been released from the hospital and are continuing to recover.

The family had lived above the store her father owned, Maurice's Corner Liquor, at the corner of 24th Street and Treat Avenue.  On March 11th, at about 4:30 in the morning, fire engulfed the building with the family inside.  Firefighers pulled the two brothers from an upstairs window.  Amal was found unconscious at the top of the stairs.  Her parents lay unconscious in the hall.

It's still not clear how the 2-alarm fire started and whether the home's smoke detectors were working.

Amal was a student at James Lick Middle School.  A family friend tells the Chronicle she was a "very special" child who was good at sports and will be remembered as "intelligent, kind and helpful."
