$100M Donated To San Francisco Hospital For Research To Cut Premature Births
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS / AP) -- A San Francisco hospital will use a $100 million gift to focus on premature birth around the globe.
The 10-year project was announced Thursday by the University of California, San Francisco's Benioff Children's Hospitals. It will be funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Salesforce.com founder Marc Benioff and wife Lynne.
About 15 million babies worldwide are born too soon, most of them in Africa and Asia. About a half-million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely.
Researchers planned to work with colleagues around the world to cut down on premature births.
In 2010, the Benioffs donated $100 million to build the children's hospital in San Francisco. Earlier this month, the couple gave another $100 million to two UCSF children's hospitals for new facilities, doctors and research.
