10 Inmates Severely Beat Guard At Jail In Milpitas

MILPITAS (CBS/AP) -- A corrections officer at Santa Clara County's troubled jail system is recovering after he was severely beaten by 10 inmates.

The officer was hospitalized with injuries including a shoulder sprain and head contusions after he was attacked Thursday at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department says the deputy noticed an inmate carrying contraband in his waistband. The inmate defiantly dropped the package at the deputy's feet. When the deputy retrieved the item, sheriff's officials say the inmates attacked.

The assault is the latest in a series of jail incidents in the county. In August, officers were accused of beating Michael Tyree to death at the main jail in San Jose.
