1 Suspect Dead, One At Large After Officer Involved Shooting In Sunnyvale

SUNNYVALE (CBS SF) -- One suspect is dead and another at large in an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon in Sunnyvale, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

Officers responded at about 4 p.m. to a report of suspicious activity at the Motel 6 at 806 W. Ahwanhee Ave., police spokesman Capt. Shawn Ahearn said.

Responding officers located a vehicle matching the description of the one reported to police, Ahearn said. Two suspects in or near the vehicle ran from officers and officers pursued them behind some buildings across the street from the hotel, he said.

The shooting took place behind the buildings, Ahearn said.

One suspect died there and the other fled east, he said.

A witness told police the fleeing suspect went into a home and police believe he is armed and dangerous.

Officers were looking for a thin black man, about 20 years old, wearing blue jeans and red or orange shirt, Ahearn said.

The man was last seen near the intersection of Borregas Avenue and east and west Ferndale avenues, public safety officials said.

Officers found a gun near the body and another inside a backpack the dead suspect was wearing, Ahearn said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, he said.

A helicopter was brought in to help in the search, according to police. By 11 p.m. police the house-to-house search was called off.
