1 Dead After Suspect Opens Fire At Group On Berkeley Sidewalk
BREKELEY (CBS SF) -- One person was killed when a man opened fire on a group of people on a Berkeley street corner Thursday evening, police said.
Berkeley police said the male victim was shot around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fairview and Harper streets, just a few blocks south of the Ashby BART station.
Initial reports indicate that the homicide occurred after the suspect approached a small group of men and women standing at the intersection. The suspect was engaged in an argument and then produced a handgun, firing multiple rounds into the group, striking the victim and causing others to flee.
The suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding, according to Berkeley police.
Emergency crews responded to multiple 911 calls to the area and rendered aid to the victim. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.
Police believe the victim was targeted.
The surrounding area was closed to traffic while the investigation was underway, police said.
