Yuba City Mall Evacuated After Man Shoots Self

YUBA CITY (CBS13) - The Yuba Sutter Mall was evacuated and shut down to the public on Sunday after a man shot and killed himself inside the mall.

It happened around 11:37 a.m. The Yuba City Police Department says it received a call from mall security that there was an adult white male believed to be in his 60s in the mall carrying a rifle. Witnesses reported seeing the man sit down on a bench with the gun inside the mall in front of the JC Penney.

Police officers tried to speak with the man. Witnesses say the man argued for a few minutes with the officers before he fired a shot, taking his own life.

"I've never seen anything like that before," said Alfredo Villegas, who captured video on his cell phone that showed the moments right before the gunshot rang out.

Villegas says he saw people screaming and crying.

A spokesperson for the Yuba City Police Department says none of their officers fired a gun.

The mall was evacuated and shut down to the public following the shooting. The gunman's body was removed from the building several hours later. The Sutter County Coroner's Office has yet to release the man's identity.
