Man Donates Record-Breaking $38.5 Million To UC Davis After Glaucoma Treatment

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A 91-year-old real estate investor has donated $38.5 million to University of California Davis, the largest amount from a single person in the school's history.

Ernest Tschannen decided to give the money to UC Davis after receiving glaucoma treatment at one of its clinics, the university said Thursday.

It will benefit eye research, clinics and training.

The school gave Tschannen naming rights for a new eye center that will be built on the UC Davis Health System campus in Sacramento.

Tschannen has also provided major funding to recreational foundations based in Sacramento.

A native of Switzerland, Tschannen says he has had great success since moving to the United States in the 1950s and is now focused on giving back.
