Woman Dies After Car Drives Into Flooded Area Near Olivehurst

OLIVEHURST (CBS13) – Authorities say a woman has died after a car she was in drove into a flooded area on Highway 70 near Olivehurst.

The woman and a man were in a vehicle and they passed Caltrans as they were preparing to close the road, California Highway Patrol says.

The two then ventured into a flooded area under an underpass and their car was submerged. The water was about 6-8 feet deep.

"The pumps that normally keep [the underpass] clear are working, but the ditch they pump into is full and the water is coming back over into it right back down to the highway,"said Olivehurst Fire Chief Wade Harrison.

Authorities say the woman was underwater for at least 15 minutes. The woman has died, CHP says.

The was able to get out of the car and was pulled to safety by firefighters. He has been transported to the hospital.
