West Sacramento Police Officer Guilty Of Sexual Assaults In Uniform
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A former West Sacramento police officer could be going to prison for a long time after being found guilty of sexually assaulting multiple women in uniform.
The Yolo County District Attorney says the severity of Sergio Alvarez's crimes require an equally strong sentence.
CBS13 spoke with some of the jurors, and they say it was not an open and closed case.
Every juror we spoke with believes Alvarez is guilty of kidnaping, rape, sexual assault and even breaking into the homes of multiple woman while he wore the uniform.
Dwayne Chapel was the jury foreman. He says out of the 40 felony counts facing Alvarez, the jury could only agree on about 25.
"It was a tough process," he said. "There were a lot of things to weigh."
He says the evidence was weak on those they threw out.
"There were some pieces that you couldn't even duct tape together," he said. "There were some holes that even logically you can't even connect, so if you can't do that, then it's hard to find someone guilty of certain things."
Alvarez's attorney declined to talk to CBS13 about his client following the verdict.
Even with the jury rejecting more than two-dozen of the district attorney's charges, those that stuck will likely leave the former cop behind bars for a very long time.
"Personally, I'm good with those," Chapel said.
Alvarez will be sentenced on April 4.
