West Sacramento Celebrates Grant That Will Improve Bike Trail
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Thanks to an $80,000 grant from Wells Fargo, major safety and aesthetic improvements will be made to a section of Sycamore Trail in West Sacramento.
Hundreds of families use the trail – especially during the school year – to get to West Village Elementary School.
"The bike trail needed revamping largely because it was in disrepair," said County Supervisor Oscar Villegas. "It wasn't really a 'bike trail' per say, it was a utility use. So really we wanted to convert it to a bike trail to make it more active and fun for families."
Celebrating the urban lift grant, city officials put on a bike clinic Friday where the first 100 kids to enter received free fitted helmets. Kids could bike through a safety course – and some families in need got a free, donated bike.
"[Kids] don't have anything to do out here," said West Sacramento resident Rachael Singh. "Anything that they can put out here for the kids to let them do … does good for the community."
The revamped bike trail will include new benches, crosswalks, lighting and landscaping. Officials hope this encourages more families to get physically active.
The trail is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
