West Sacramento Bridge District Could Expand With 300 New Apartments, Retail Space

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — More development is expected along the river in West Sacramento as the Bridge District expands.

Nearly 300 apartments near Raley Field could be approved by the West Sacramento City Council on Wednesday, creating the first large residential development facing the river.

Another project, an odd-looking structure called The Barn, is expected to be done later in 2016. It's expected to be a future music, food and event venue.

"We really like of being downtown, but at the same time having our own unique identity, and just a lot of character," said Sara Loyst.

She and her husband moved to condos in the Bridge District before there was much there. Her neighborhood has character, but it's missing a few things.

"More mixed-use," she said. "First, you have people living here, and now we need more commercial. restaurants, bars, night activities going on would be fun."

That could be on the way. The five-story project called River Edge would also have 16,000 square feet of retail for residents already in the area and those soon to come.

Sketches show a pool at the complex with what's being called an urban beach that offers sand, chairs and umbrellas bumping next to the path to the Sacramento River.

The plan goes before the West Sacramento City Council on Wednesday. If approved, it could break ground as early as next spring.

The site is where TBD Fest has been held for two years. The city says that festival would likely be pushed farther south if the apartments are approved.
