Wave Sweeps Elderly Couple Into Ocean Off Pacifica Coast

PACIFICA, Calif. (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard rescue crew has pulled an elderly man from the ocean off Pacifica after a wave swept him and a woman into the water.

A witness tells television news station KNTV (http://bit.ly/1WcNw3p) the woman was wading in ankle-deep water when a strong wave knocked her over near Pacifica's pier Tuesday.

Beth Grossman says the man was trying to help her get out of the water when both were swept into the ocean.

Authorities say a surfer spotted the woman and helped her back to the beach.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Lt. Marcia Medina says she was responsive and taken to a hospital.

A U.S. Coast Guard diver found the man and he was airlifted to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
