Visiting Russian Delegation Snubbed At Sacramento City Council Meeting

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Politicians visiting from Russia were supposed to receive special recognition during Tuesday's Sacramento City Council meeting, but city leaders hastily reversed course.

The plan called for a half-dozen delegates from Russia to be recognized at the beginning of the meeting, but that didn't happen.

With Russia poised to take over Ukraine, the item was pulled from the agenda at the last minute by Sacramento's vice mayor.

The Russian delegates say they're in Sacramento this week learning about American politics and to promote peace.

Local hosts say the Russian visitors have been watching coverage of the conflict on TV and through social media.

The delegates say that despite President Vladimir Putin's order to have Russian troops take over Crimea, the U.S. and Russian leaders can find common ground.

The vice mayor did meet with the delegates behind closed doors, and they will remain in Sacramento through Saturday.
