Vandals Target Site Of Nation's First Public Parkour Course In Lathrop

LATHROP (CBS13) — It's set to be the first public parkour course in the nation, but before it's even finished, vandals have already left their mark on the pricy park.

Deputies say two people vandalized three areas within the construction site for the multi-million dollar Generations Center.

Security cameras captured the tagging of the site, which will include a library, skate park with a BMX and wheelchair course, an amphitheater, and the first municipal parkour course in the country.

A wall that will soon be covered in art instead was covered in gang graffiti, as was the library building.

The city says the cleanup process won't delay the grand opening, scheduled for this summer.

Crews plan on sandblasting the vandalized walls and painting over other areas by the end of the week, as deputies hope the surveillance video will help identify who is responsible.

Neighbors say the new center should be off-limits to taggers, and hope that if they're caught, they're prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The park's construction budget is more than $7 million, but it's not clear how much it will cost to fix the damage.
