Utah Man Goes On Fast Over State's Gay Marriage Ruling
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man says he quit eating after a federal judge struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage on Dec. 20 and he'll continue the fast until the prohibition is reinstated.
Trestin Meacham says he has lost 25 pounds since beginning the fast two weeks ago and is only surviving on water and vitamins.
He criticizes U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby's ruling that Utah's ban on same-sex marriage violates the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples.
Meacham wants Utah to exercise the option of nullification, claiming states can nullify federal government actions they deem to be unconstitutional.
But attorney Greg Skordas told KTVX-TV that states cannot infringe on constitutional rights.
Meacham says his fast is about "religious freedom," and has "nothing to do with hatred" of gays.
