Two BASE Jumpers Believed To Be Dead After Leaping From Bridge Near Big Sur

SALINAS, Calif. (AP) - Two BASE jumpers are presumed dead after jumping from the Bixby Bridge near Big Sur.

KION-TV reports that the two people have been missing since Saturday morning. Sheriff's officials say a video shows Mary Katherine "Katie" Connell, of Ventura, successfully descending 300 feet to the beach below the bridge. Shortly after her landing, large waves in Bixby Creek appear to overtake her.

Sheriff Steve Bernal says a man jumped off the bridge to help her. The video stops there, which Bernal says means he likely took off his helmet and parachute to rescue her.

Bernal says based on the video and his office's investigation, both jumpers are presumed dead.
