Train derails in historic Northern California mining town, hits several parked cars

Train derailment closes roads in Sonora

TUOLUMNE COUNTY – People are being asked to avoid the area due to a train derailment in Sonora on Friday morning.

The incident happened a little before 9:30 a.m. near Hospital Road and Washington Street.

According to Sonora police, the train derailed and hit several cars that were parked in the area. No injuries have been reported.

Further, police said there is no indication of a hazardous situation. 

Exactly what led up to the derailment is unclear. 

Authorities are warning that hard closures could be in place until 7 p.m. Friday. The following roads are closed: Washington Street and Restano Way, and Washington Street and Calaveras Way.

Sonora is a historic mining town in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 50 miles northeast of Modesto.
