Tower Cafe Owner Upset Food Trucks Could Be Coming Near Sacramento Restaurant

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The owner of Sacramento's Tower Cafe is launching a food fight over a plan that could bring food trucks to his block.

Jim Seyman has owned the iconic Tower Cafe for two decades.

The restaurant is tucked underneath the Tower Theatre and across from the building that once housed the iconic Tower Records.

He says the intersection on Broadway has too few parking spots, and that he can't afford to lose customers to weekly food truck events.

"There's no more room for other people to come in, there just isn't," Tower Cafe owner Jim Seyman said.

Seyman has filed an appeal with the Sacramento Planning Commission.

San Francisco-based company called "off-the-grid" has already signed a lease for a parking lot across the street from tower cafe.

In a statement a company spokesperson wrote:

"Off The Grid believes in working with neighborhoods to unlock potential community spaces

through increased foot traffic and diverse food experiences."

Off The Grid already has contracts for food events at the Sacramento Crocker Museum, and at the new Barn in West Sacramento.

Now the company is stirring debate with a planned move across from the Tower Cafe.

"That is going to be a really heated issue if they do try and expand there," Seyman said.
