Tow Truck Driver Killed On Highway 50 Identified; Search Continues For Big Rig That Hit Him

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The tow truck driver who was struck and killed by a big rig has been identified by the California Highway Patrol.

Michael C. Bower, 29, of Dixon pulled in his tow truck at around 7:50 p.m. on Monday night on westbound Highway 50 near Jefferson Boulevard. The truck was having mechanical issues, and he placed emergency triangles at the back of his truck as a precaution for other drivers.

About an hour later, he fixed the issue and was collecting the triangles when a big rig or another high-profile vehicle was also traveling westbound in the No. 3 lane. That truck veered to the right and clipped Bower, killing him at the scene. The vehicle continued westbound on Highway 50 without stopping.

Officers say there's a chance the driver may not have known they hit a person, but if they were involved in the accident, they need to report it right away. The CHP says the truck passed through the area just before 9 p.m. on Monday night.
