Toddler Reportedly Chasing After Ball Struck, Killed By Bus In Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Police say a 2-year-old boy was hit and killed by a public bus in the Fruitvale section of Oakland.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office identified the child as Jeremiah Esera, of Oakland.

Oakland Police Officer Marco Marquez says the accident Tuesday happened as the bus was traveling northbound on 35th Avenue.

He says police are investigating whether the boy was stuck after running into the street after a ball. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alameda County Transit spokesman Robert Lyles says the driver, a five-year veteran of the transit agency, is being questioned by police and would undergo drug and alcohol screening tests. The driver's name has not been released.
