Thrill-Seekers Post Video Of Tower Bridge Climb On YouTube

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Four thrill-seekers set out to something risky and illegal when they scaled the Tower Bridge in Sacramento.

The climbers blurred their faces before uploading the stunt to YouTube where they shimmied up the outside of a metal cage before scrambling up one ladder, then another.

While it was certainly daring, it was also illegal and is considered trespassing, said Caltrans spokesman Dennis Keaton.

"We don't want anyone climbing the bridge, scaling the bridge at any time," he said.

The Tower Bridge is under the jurisdiction of Caltrans. He says there are eight surveillance cameras, and someone is on duty to keep watch and raise the ridge for passing ships.

But they aren't always there.

"The times are staggered. There's not necessarily gonna be staff -- it depends on the availability of the staff also," Keaton said. "There's only so much lighting on a bridge and you also have dark corners."

He declined to discuss exact schedules for security reasons.

Keaton calls the climb a concern, but not necessarily an exposure of a security risk.

"It's sorta like if someone wants to tag an overcrossing or if they decide to jump off a bridge—you're not necessarily going to be able to stop them," he said.

Caltrans says people do try climbing the bridge from time to time, especially on the weekends. At this point, there are no plans to increase security after the video.
