Threatening Scammer Calls 50 El Dorado County Residents In One Day

EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) - Authorities are asking residents to be vigilant after they received dozens of reports of a particularly menacing scammer.

The scammer reportedly followed the script of the common IRS phone scam: a caller would tell someone that they owe some money and a warrant would be issued for their arrest if they didn't pay up.

With this particular scammer, however, people reported him to be aggressive and even threatening.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, two women reported that the scammer threatened to rape them.

"This scam is not uncommon," wrote Lt. Tom Murdoch with the sheriff's office in a press release. "However 50 calls in one day is excessive."

No one has reportedly fallen for the scam. Deputies advise anyone who gets a call from this or any other scammer to hang up the phone and block the number, if possible.
