Thieves Target Beehives Ahead Of Almond Season

OROVILLE (CBS13) - Hundreds of beehives have been going missing in and around Butte County over the past few weeks.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office says more than 500 beehives were stolen in just two recent incidents. Deputies say a beekeeper reported they had 280 hives stolen on Saturday.

A Colusa County beekeeper also reported that about 240 hives had been stolen a week ago.

Officials say hundreds of beehives were stole at the beginning of almond pollination season last year.

The thefts look to have been happening at night. Detectives believe other beekeepers could be responsible for the thefts.
