Suspect In Custody After Chase, Standoff That Closed Highway 99 North Of Sacramento

SUTTER COUNTY (CBS13) — Authorities say a suspect is now in custody after a critical incident that had Highway 99 blocked in both directions several miles north of Sacramento on Tuesday.

The incident happened at Highway 99 and Riego Road. California Highway Patrol said officers were dealing with a suspect who has barricaded themself after a chase that started just after 10 a.m. in Olivehurst after an officer spotted a car that had been reported stolen several hours before.

CHP says the suspect claimed he had a bomb, a gun, and a five-year-old child with him, prompting the tense situation and significant closure of both directions of Highway 99.

According to the Sutter County Sheriff's Office, the CHP advised that the suspect — later identified as Kyle Ross McCray — made threats of "shooting it out with the cops."

Sutter County sheriff's deputies negotiated with the McCray, who remained uncooperative. Tear gas was deployed into McCray's vehicle, which led him to exit and take on a fighting stance.

A K9 was then deployed and helped get the suspect into custody a little before 1 p.m. It turned out that the suspect didn't have a bomb, a child, or a gun.

McCray was taken to the hospital to be treated for a K-9 bite and was later booked into the Yuba County Jail, where he faces charges of felony evading, auto theft, parole violation and driving on a suspended license.

Highway 99 has since reopened.
