Statewide Candidates Reveal Spending, Fundraising

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Candidates in competitive races for California's statewide offices are reporting their fundraising and spending.

In the race for state controller, Democratic Board of Equalization member Betty Yee leads Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, a Republican, in cash on hand. Yee has $496,000 while Swearengin has less than half that amount, $215,000. Swearengin also owes $105,000 while Yee owes about $38,000.

Sen. Alex Padilla, a Democrat, reports $410,000 in his race for secretary of state against Republican Pete Peterson. Peterson has $53,000 but is carrying $81,000 in debt.

The candidates for schools superintendent are close. School reformer Marshall Tuck has nearly $700,000 for his challenge to incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, who reported having $609,000.

But teachers unions are spending millions in independent expenditures to support Torlakson.
