South Sacramento House Fire A Reminder Of Increasing Home Fire Danger

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Several house fires are forcing families to find some place to live as we enter a time of year when the fire danger increases substantially.

Almost half of fires during the holiday season get started in the kitchen.

A family on Maraalee Way and Logan Street in South Sacramento got a frightening wakeup call.

"Crews arriving on scene found heavy smoke on the front and side of the house," said Chris Harvey with the Sacramento Fire Department.

The U.S. Fire Administration says a little more than 49 percent of accidental fires come from cooking. Another culprit includes space heaters.

Smoke detectors are credited with saving lives during these often times destructive blazes.
