1 Grant Union High Football Player Killed, 1 Injured Following Shooting; Playoff Game Postponed

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Grant Union High School varsity football player has died following a shooting Friday afternoon in Sacramento.

The shooting happened around 3:24 p.m. Police say a group of people was in a vehicle along Mabel Street and Silver Eagle Road when someone fired multiple rounds at the vehicle, hitting the victim and another player.

The condition of the injured player has not been made available to the media.

Police confirmed on Friday night that a player in a car with five occupants was killed in the shooting, while another football player in the vehicle was also injured.

The students drove more than a mile back to the school, because they felt that was a safe place where they could seek treatment, police said.

It's not known if the shooter was in another vehicle or approached on foot. The caliber of the weapon used is also unknown.

The shooting prompted the postponement of Friday's playoff game against Modesto's Beyer High School. There is no word if the game will be made up at a later date.
