Solano County Sweep Targets Parolees

SOLANO COUNTY (CBS13) — A massive sweep targeting non-violent offenders wrapped up on Wednesday night where police, sheriff's deputies and the FBI came together in Solano County.

This type of massive sweep doesn't happen often, but the random searches help law enforcement be proactive and potentially stop a crime before it happens.

"We're doing compliance checks to make sure they're not in possession of anything they're not supposed to be," said Vacaville Police Sgt. Steve Carey

The targets included known gang members, to others with a history of crime involving guns, narcotics or property. Officers randomly searched them to make sure they were compliant with the terms of their parole and probation, but at least 20 were not.

Police say the problem is with early release for nonviolent offenders under Proposition 47. The rules only look at the parolee's last offense, but officers say that doesn't mean they don't have a violent past beyond that.
