Social Media Videos Highlight Cold Cases For El Dorado County District Attorney's Office

EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) — The El Dorado County District Attorney's office is producing crime show-style videos and sharing them on social media to help close cold cases.

For Tammie, Kathi and Marcia, no amount of time can subside the pain from their grandfather's unsolved murder.

In 1986, longtime Folsom Prison guard and well-known community member Halley Wing was shot and killed in his own driveway. No one has been convicted.

"They never forget, and so it's important on the law enforcement side that we never forget," said El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson.

His office has 60 unsolved murders on file, so they are producing short videos to jog some memories and solve cases on their Facebook page.

"The people who do crime dramas and things like that for a living, they've been very successful at it, so we have looked at what they've done and tried to borrow some of those things they do to try and get more interest," he said.

So far, two cases have been profiled on social media and investigator Dave Stevenson says it's already brought in some tips from as far away as Canada.

"Hundreds of thousands of people have viewed it and that's what's important," he said. "That's what gets the information out and thats gonna cause somebody to come forward with information."

Wing's granddaughters are among the many families counting on the videos to help bring them closure. Their video will post next month.
