Shooting in Midtown Sacramento injures 3 people
A shooting in Midtown Sacramento injured three women early Sunday morning, police said.
Around 12:45 a.m., police in Midtown saw people in the area reporting that someone had been shot near the 2700 block of J Street.
Officers arrived at the scene and found three people who had been shot. They were all taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police confirmed the shooting started with an altercation inside The Lock & Key. CBS Sacramento reached out to the business but has not heard back.
"There's going to be some pretty serious discussions going on about what we can be doing different," councilmember Phil Pluckebaum said.
Pluckebaum added that the shooting happened on a busy weekend for Sacramento with the Aftershock festival, a concert at the Golden 1 Center and various events across the city.
"How do officers prioritize when there are a lot of events happening all at once?" Pluckebaum said. "That's a big challenge, dare I say problem in the City of Sacramento. We are understaffed in our police department when there are multiple events running simultaneously, high-priority calls get priority."
Pluckebaum said police are working overtime, especially when events happen simultaneously.
He's proposing a possible solution could be creating a bigger space between cars and venues, like on K Street.
"It's easy enough for people to hide something in a car that we might not want them to have and or just pass through in the vehicle and do bad things," Pluckebaum said.
Police are investigating and have not yet said what led to the shooting.
