Sheriff: Suspect Shot By Officer During Pot Grow Raid At Wildlife Refuge

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) – Authorities say a Fish and Wildlife officer shot and killed an armed suspect at a wildlife preserve south of Elk Grove Wednesday morning.

Lisa Bowman with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says their deputies were helping with a  Department of Justice raid on a suspected marijuana grow in the Stone Lakes Wildlife Refuge off the 1600 block of Hood-Franklin Road.

During the operation, a Fish and Wildlife officer was confronted by the armed suspect.

"The team that contacted the grower first found themselves in a mortal threat. There were shots fired and the suspect was ultimately shot and killed," said Capt. Patrick Foy with the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The suspect was shot multiple times, Foy said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident, Bowman says.

State investigators say this time of year is considered the beginning of marijuana growing season in the Central Valley and Foothills.
